The line is being drawn increasingly sharper between two rival blocs of countries in the Middle East: A moderate pro-Western bloc of Arab states including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and North Africa, and a smaller radical bloc that includes Syria and Iran, both of which are working to attract Turkey and Iraq into their anti-Western bloc. Syria and Iran have adopted, supported and sponsored other regional militant groups most prominent of which are Lebanon's Shiite Hizbullah militia and the Palestinian Hamas which are used by Damascus and Tehran as leverage to raise or lower the level of their hostility to the West, specifically the United States and Israel. A report published in the Kuwaiti newspaper AL WATAN last week noted that the role of the Saudi-Egyptian-led axis was waning while the Syrian-Iranian axis was gaining ground. The report said that government officials in Saudi Arabia and Egypt are aware of the fact that Syria and Iran have become major players in the region mainly due to their support of militants such as Hamas and Hizbullah. However, the report said, the Saudis and Egyptians disagree on how to deal with realities on the ground. For example, the Egyptians did not encourage Saudi King Abdullah when he visited Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in October in an attempt to return Damascus to the Arab fold after distancing Syria from Iran.
