Description

Introduction The research this article is based on was an investigation into the nature of children's independent collaborative play. I was interested in how the play began and developed, the themes and activities within the play, how leadership was expressed, how conflicts arose and were resolved, and why some children's efforts to move into existing play episodes were successful and some were not. An area of particular interest of mine (e.g. Mawson, 2002; Mawson, 2003a; Mawson, 2003b) is to understand and encourage children's technological experiences in early childhood settings, and this aspect of the research is the focus of this article. I first describe and discuss the technological knowledge and understanding exhibited in the independent play of three- and four-year-old children in two early childhood settings, a sessional kindergarten and an alllay centre. I then address the implications of this information for early childhood teachers' technological subject knowledge.
